Discovered in 1994, Göbekli Tepe predates Stonehenge by 6,000 years and challenges the classical timeline of human agriculture and ritual architecture.
When Klaus Schmidt began excavations at Göbekli Tepe in 1994, orthodox archaeology believed that complex megalithic architecture could only be built by settled agrarian societies with division of labor.\n\nGöbekli Tepe inverted that hypothesis. Dating to 9,600 BC (Pre-Pottery Neolithic A), the site consists of massive T-shaped limestone pillars weighing up to 20 tons arranged in circular enclosures. Yet, there are no houses, no domestic hearths, and no cultivated crops found at the original levels.\n\nThis suggests that organized religion and ritual gathering were the catalysts for agriculture — not its result.
